Positions
Graduate Students
We are looking for strong and motivated students who are interested in experimental work on Photonics and Microwave Photonics! If you are interested in our research, please read the
flyer or contact us (mfok@uga.edu) to learn more about our laboratory. More admission information can be found
here.
Undergraduate Students
We offer UGA undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in our research. Preference is given to individuals who are responsible, organized, and committed to working on projects in the lab.
Students from other institutions can participate in summer research in our lab through the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.
Minority Participate
We are a member of the Peach State LSAMP! The Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (Peach State LSAMP) aims to significantly increase the number of underrepresented minority students statewide who complete undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Peach State LSAMP is a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored program with the mission to significantly increase the number of underrepresented minorities pursuing degrees Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Click
here to learn more about Peach State LSAMP.
Young Dawgs
Young dawgs who join our lab will have the opportunity to learn how photonics improves our quality of communications, how a photonics neuron mimic the behavior of a biological neuron, and how photonics techniques is used to enhance security of a wireless system. Besides hands on experience on research projects, students will learn how to automatically control high-end equipments and instrument in a photonics and microwave lab. One of the fun part of being in our lab is to put your hands on a number of optics related science projects specially designed for young dawgs. You are welcome to take some of them home as a souvenir!
Visiting Scholar/Postdoctoral Scientist
Please contact us if you are interested in visiting scholar/postdoctoral positions on our projects. Strong experimental skill, excellent scientific thinking, mentoring and communication skills are required. Experience in photonics, microwave, and fiber optics is desirable.
Principle Investigator
Mable P. Fok
Mable Fok joined UGA in 2012 after her postdoc training at Princeton University for five years. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia, in the division of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. She has published over 170 journal and conference papers. Her recent research interest is on development of biomedical sensors, photonic implementation of neuromorphic algorithm and developing new photonic techniques for dynamic and flexible RF communication systems.
Dr. Fok is the recipient of the 2017 NSF CAREER award, 2016 University of Georgia CURO Research Mentoring Award, 2015 University of Georgia College of Engineering Excellence in Research Faculty Award, 2014 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from ORAU, and 2010 IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship.
Graduate Students
Qidi Liu
Qidi Liu joined the WAVE Lab in Fall 2017 as a PhD candidate. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Communication Engineering from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Master in Optics from Beihang University in China. His current research interest is on microwave photonics and neuromorphic photonics.
Mei Yang
Mei Yang joined the WAVE lab in Fall 2018. She received her Master degree from Jinan University, majoring in Optical Engineering, with Prof. Yunhan Luo. She got her bachelor degree on Applied Physics from Zhengzhou University in 2015. Her current research interest is on stretchable fiber optic sensors for soft robotics.
Allen Spain
Allen Spain received his B.Eng degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Georgia. Allen is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in WAVE Lab, so he can better understand the field of electronics and champion a career in nanotechnology or robotics. In his free time, he likes to exercise because he, like Socrates, wants to explore the beauty and strength of which his body is capable. Allen is a veracious reader within the genre of science, both fiction and non- fiction, but will not turn down an intramural soccer game.
Undergraduate Students
Hamza Naqawe
Hamza is a second year Undergradute Electrical Engineering major. He is working on a stretchable soft robotic fiber optic sensors project with Mei Yang. He hopes to pursue his varied interests in computer science, electrical engineering, and physics at a graduate level. In his free time, Hamza likes to explore different pastimes through various cultural organizations to Quizbowl trivia tournaments to developing his foreign language vocabulary
Vaishnavi Thesma
I am a third year computer systems engineer in UGA. My research interests are in learning more about neuromorphic engineering. In my free time, I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and friends. I am looking forward to having a good research experience here.
Mario Garcia
Hi, My name is Mario Garcia and I am a third year Computer Systems Engineering major at UGA. In my technical time, I enjoy programming electronics in order to get them to do what I want! I have a passion for helping others out in any possible way even if it requires me to learn something new. When possible, I enjoy buying and collecting new sneakers and also hanging out with friends. It's my goal to participate in WAVE research so that I could further advance my knowledge regarding electronics and fiber optics as these aspects of technology continue to push the industry forward.
Young Dawgs - High School Students
